Castles

Spread out in the Dordogne there are more than 1001 castles and many of them are very interesting to visit. Some of them well decorated and in a possession of beautiful gardens.

Château Commarque

The Commarque Castle (a 10-minute drive) is partly a ruin and a castle. It is beautifully situated in the woods, on the transition from a hill to a small valley. It is never really crowded and therefore an ideal destination close by.

Maison Forte de Reignac

This castle (at 10 minutes from La Cipière) is built along the Vézère valley and dates from the 16th century. It was built under overhanging rocks, which makes it very special in France, almost unique. There are paintings and furniture present in the rooms and on top of the castle you have a beautiful view on the valley.

Château de Losse

During a canoe trip from Montignac you can’t miss it. The walls are high above the river Vézère and offer a beautiful view on the surroundings. The garden is very well maintained and forms a unity with the castle. The castle is not big but worth to visit, approximately 10km away from La Cipière.

Manoir St Leon

The tower (12th century) and the Manor (15th century) of Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (10km from La Cipière) form a beautiful architectural ensemble. Rich furniture, as well as several music, herbalism and fantastic animals from the Middle Ages collections. The magnificent slate-roofed frames and the rampart walkway of the tower are fully accessible and offer a beautiful view of the village. The garden is home to a remarkable giant cedar.

Château de Campagne

In the small village of Campagne (at 15 minutes by car) a beautiful castle with gardens is located. There are many monumental trees, a little stream and everything is very well maintained. The estate is also the starting point for walks in the nearby forests. The castle itself is not accessible but the garden is. Entrance is free.

Château de Castelnaud

Like Beynac, the castle of Castelnaud (a 35min drive) is elevated on a rock above the Dordogne river. It has been part of the long quarrels between the French and the English in the Aquitaine region during the 100 year war. It is lively furnished both inside and outside.

Château de Beynac

For those who want to drive a little further (20 minutes) Beynac is recommended. High above the Dordogne river this large 12th century castle overlooks the valley. The interior is slightly bare but the view is all the more beautiful. After the visit you can descend to the village at the foot of the castle.

Château Milandes

This castle was built in the 15th century by the lords of Castelnaud, who were living in a nearby castle. Milandes was built as a residential castle and is very beautiful. The garden with its lawn and large flower beds is one of the biggest attractions. The castle became well known because of the actress and entertainer Josephine Baker who lived there in the middle of the last century. There is also a show with birds of prey. Milandes lies along the Dordogne river at a distance of 35km from La Cipière.

Château de Fénelon

This beautiful medieval castle is located south of Sarlat along the Dordogne, at 40 minutes from La Cipière. It is richly decorated and has an interesting history. From the terrace there is a beautiful view of the Dordogne valley.

Château Hautefort

Hautefort is a special castle surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden with splendid views of the surrounding hills. It is further away than the other castles (about one hour away) but is definitely worth a visit if you like highly decorated castles.
