Castles and Cities

Spread out in the Dordogne there are more than 1001 castles and many of them are very interesting to visit. Some of them well decorated and in a possession of beautiful gardens. Others are ruins were the time stoo still. Beautiful old cities like Sarlat and Montignac are vibrant places full of monuments and local markets.

Sarlat la Canéda

Sarlat (at 25km) is a well-preserved medieval town attracting many tourists in the summer. The center is car-free for a greater part and offers many nice shops and restaurants. Some interesting sites include the Manoir de Guisson and the Sainte Marie church which has a glaze lift to the top from where you have a beautiful view on the city. The city offers you also a nice market twice a week. So plenty of things to see and experience.

Montignac

Montignac is a 20 minutes’ drive and is a small but vibrant city along the river Vezère. Next to a visit to the caves of Lascaux there is much more to experience. In July for example there is a large music festival. Groups from all over the world gather together for this nice event.

Saint-Leon-sur-Vézère

This little village belongs to one of the “plus beau village the France” and is nice to visit. It is pleasant to walk through the little streets and stroll along the river. There are some excellent restaurants and cafés. The village is also the start of many canoe tours on the Vézère and at the other side of the river you can find the adventure park Le Conquil, a real topic to visit. You will find this all at a distance of about 8km from La Cipière

Les Eyzies

Les Eyzies is located 10 minutes from La Cipière, on the banks of the Vézère river. The village is small but worth a visit, partly due to the fact that many prehistoric finds have been made here in the vicinity. The village therefore houses, among other things, the National Prehistoric Museum. In addition, there are a few cafes, restaurants and small shops.

Domme

One of the most beautiful villages in France is located on a cliff above the Dordogne river (30 minutes from La Cipière). The defensive wall is still largely intact, just like the old city gates. From the cliff there is beautiful views over the Dordogne and the villages and castles along this river.

Château de Losse

During a canoe trip from Montignac you can’t miss it. The walls are high above the river Vézère and offer a beautiful view on the surroundings. The garden is very well maintained and forms a unity with the castle. The castle is not big but worth to visit, approximately 10km away from La Cipière.

Château Commarque

The Commarque Castle (a 10-minute drive) is partly a ruin and a castle. It is beautifully situated in the woods, on the transition from a hill to a small valley. It is never really crowded and therefore an ideal destination close by.

Maison Forte de Reignac

This castle (at 10 minutes from La Cipière) is built along the Vézère valley and dates from the 16th century. It was built under overhanging rocks, which makes it very special in France, almost unique. There are paintings and furniture present in the rooms and on top of the castle you have a beautiful view on the valley.

Château de Campagne

In the small village of Campagne (at 5 minutes by car) a beautiful castle with gardens is located. There are many monumental trees, a little stream and everything is very well maintained. The estate is also the starting point for walks in the nearby forests. The castle itself is not accessible but the garden is. Entrance is free.

Château de Beynac

For those who want to drive a little further (20 minutes) Beynac is recommended. High above the Dordogne river this large 12th century castle overlooks the valley. The interior is slightly bare but the view is all the more beautiful. After the visit you can descend to the village at the foot of the castle.

Château de Castelnaud

Like Beynac, this castle is elevated on a rock above the Dordogne river. It has been part of the long quarrels between the French and the English in the Aquitaine region during the 100 year war. It is lively furnished both inside and outside.

Château Milandes

This castle was built in the 15th century by the lords of Castelnaud, who were living in a nearby castle. Milandes was built as a residential castle and is very beautiful. The garden with its lawn and large flower beds is one of the biggest attractions. The castle became well known because of the actress and entertainer Josephine Baker who lived there in the middle of the last century. There is also a show with birds of prey. Milandes lies along the Dordogne river at a distance of 35km from La Cipière.

Château Hautefort

Hautefort is a special castle surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden with splendid views of the surrounding hills. It is further away than the other castles (about one hour away) but is definitely worth a visit if you like highly decorated castles.
